“Before the Wedding” by Muñoz Degrain.

“Before the Wedding”, a painting inspired by the story of the lovers of Teruel, will be on display at the Mausoleo de los Enamorados from May 25 to October 31.

The work, on loan from the Prado Museum, will arrive in Teruel on May 23rd by special SIT transport from Madrid. Everything will be ready in the room containing the 1882 painting by Muñoz Degrain.

One of the keys to doing this job was 50% humidity. To achieve this, humidifiers were installed.

Degrain’s painting will not be unpacked until May 24 because it needs 24 hours to acclimate to the conditions that will be its home for the next few months. The Valencian painter made two paintings of the story of Isabel and Diego. One of large dimensions, exhibited in the 19th century room of the Prado, and another, with Isabel as the main figure, exhibited in the Mudejar capital.

“It is very curious because all the paintings we have of the lovers represent the last scene of the story when she dies and he approaches. This time it is different because it is her before the wedding, just before the moment when she marries Pedro de Azagra.”

-Patricia García, director of the Amantes de Teruel Foundation- talks about the importance of this weaving. So “it is a completely new and different vision to what we are used to”.
